How Counter-Strike 1.6 works

Counter-Strike 1.6 is a team-based tactical shooter that has been one of the most-played competitive games for over two decades. Every match puts two sides against each other: Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists. You can play online or practice offline with bots.

Matches run in rounds on fixed maps. At the start of each round, both teams get $800 to spend on weapons and gear — pistols, rifles, kevlar vests, defusal kits. Winning rounds earns bonus money for better loadouts next round.

Victory in a round comes in two ways: eliminating all members of the opposing team, or completing the map's primary objective. Unlike its predecessor Half-Life, Counter-Strike 1.6 has no scripted story. The scenario is defined entirely by the map and the task it sets for each side.

The two most common map types are de_ (bomb defusal) maps and cs_ (hostage rescue) maps. On de_ maps, Terrorists must plant a C4 explosive at one of the map's bomb sites and protect it until detonation. Counter-Terrorists must prevent the plant, or defuse the bomb in time. On cs_ maps, Counter-Terrorists must locate hostages scattered across the map and escort them to the extraction zone. If the round ends with the CT team still alive but the hostages not evacuated, the Terrorists win. Beyond the standard maps, the game supports a huge library of custom maps, mods, skins and models created by the community over more than two decades.
